Brass, glass, wood, and leather..I want it!
Hello all,

I too have recently discovered "Steamlife" (Steampunk IMHO denotes irrational rebellion rather than the victorian ideal of reserve and dignity in all endevours, but to each thier own). I am working on designs for a steam style computer (arent we all?). I have recently finished a custom wooden computer case to showcase my watercooling system and now, I really wish I had done it in a steam motief.

I have not yet read any steampunk novels but would appreceate guidance on which to start with. I have always been a big fan of science fiction and read the classics as a kid (Verne, etc)

I have been promised by my wife that I can build a custom office in our new house (two years down the road) in steam style. (As long as it is tasteful of course, lol) I am looking for ideas on design and style for that project.

I am a cabinet maker and own a small shop in mid Michigan, I have a teen aged daughter. My other addiction (besides computers) is flying RC planes.

Thats me.

I can't remember right off the top where I saw it, but there's a company in California (big surprise) that fashioned their entire office with a steampunk theme. Each of the work areas was unique, and the overall effect was pretty cool, if a bit more industrial/graphic artist like (if that makes sense). If I can come across where I found it, I'll post the URL.

Other than that, I would guess do some research into Gentlemen's Clubs around the turn of the century (not the adult kind, but the country club, exclusive rich-mans getaway kind). I would imagine dark colored wood, rich leather covered chairs, heavy wood furniture, not brightly lit, lots of bookshelves...

I've got a room that my wife is giving me to decorate as I wish (mainly to showcase my leatherwork) but it's going to be steampunk'd as much as I can get away with. Look forward to hearing how you are progressing!

I am a cabinet maker by trade, I will do it all in unstained cherry (which will darken with age). Other than that it is still up in the air. Here is a picture of my current office:

Cool. You have a way to go (love the painted miniatures by the way). I found the site I was talking about earlier...

The office was brighter than I remember. You've probably seen Datamancer's desktop PC mod that became an entire desk...

The pictures there seem to me more of a steampunk vision. *Shrug* too many choices. I look forward to watching your progress.

I have several years to go. We are not planning the move for 4 years yet. I have seen that office before, my wife likes the idea of the picture frames everywhere but not the large pool table Big Grin

One place i really mean to visit next time I'm in LA is the Edison.

Might be able to browse around and get some ideas in how to do steampunk in 'large' scale

(click on visual tour)

http://www.willpearson.co.uk/virtual_tou...format=fpp
etc

prob some better examples out there, but thats the one that i had off the top of my head.

The Edison... Man, I always forget about that place... Put me on the invite list, SPL. My wife and I would love to visit there as well.
